Nash Needs You!
Background:
On November 17th, 2025, Amphitheater School District released a plan which will close E.C. Nash Elementary School and relocate the students to Keeling and Walker Elementary Schools. This is a bad decision that disproportionately harms Nash students.
Amphi has classroom space for around 18,000 students but only 10,500 students currently enrolled. Many schools are operating at less than 50% of capacity. The District says they must consolidate schools to remain financially solvent.
Amphi is listening to the community. On December 2nd Amphi’s superintendent modified the plan for Northside students due to community feedback. Your voice can make a difference! Please take a moment to read the points below then take action to help save Nash.
Why Closing Nash is a Bad Idea
-
Nash is one of only two Amphi elementary schools with increasing enrollment.

-
Birth rates are declining across Arizona but the 85705 zip code still has the highest birth rate (10.9 births per 1000 residents) among the zip codes served by Amphi.

-
Nash is located in a high-density area with young families who are eager to choose their neighborhood school. These families are a guaranteed source of enrollment for Amphi long term. The plan risks losing these students from the district permanently.
-
The City of Tucson and private developers are actively building affordable housing within the Nash boundary. La Frontera has just completed 44 units at Sleepy Hollow just one block away from the school. The City just opened the Milagros apartment building 3 blocks away.
-
Nash families are the most vulnerable in the district. Area families rely on the school to be a community connector providing preschool, after school care, family food support, and special ed services. Nash is a stable anchor in the community and neighbors are proud of their school.
-
Many Nash families lack cars. These families will not be able to participate in school functions if they cannot readily access their school. What do these families do when a child gets sick and needs to be picked up early? How do these families attend parent-teacher conferences or school events?
-
Lulu Walker Elementary is 4.7 miles away from Nash. It is 1 hour by bus and close to 2 hours on foot. Nash families without cars will simply not be able to participate in school life at Walker. If Nash must be closed, then the students should be moved to Prince (1.8 miles) or Keeling (1.3 miles) instead.
-
Nash families will choose Douglas Elementary School (Flowing Wells District) over Walker simply due to its proximity (1.8 miles). This will further erode Amphi’s enrollment.
-
The Thrive in the 05 effort is focused on improving the 85705 zip code through workforce and economic development. Closing a neighborhood school in the heart of the Choice Neighborhoods area goes directly against these efforts.
